WS ❄️ Week 5: Claws battle back to edge out the Fire

by Don K

Game 2 of Saturday’s four-game lineup saw the defending champion Claws take on the new-look Fire. Coming into the match, the Fire were looking to continue on as one of just two remaining undefeated teams in the league (the other being the Irish). Jalyn “Lil Durant” was tasked with trying to lead his team to victory for the second straight game without his running mate Anthony “Kobe” Meggo, sidelined due to injury. The Claws have struggled with slow starts throughout the season, and it was yet another slow start in week 5’s matchup. The Fire’s Niel Isidro led the charge with 14 points and 3 steals, while Sam Gustavus helped keep the ball rolling for their squad with 10 points and 12 rebounds in a game where their star Lil Durant was held to just 10 points on the afternoon. The Claws, once again able to overcome their slow start, scrapped their way into the lead, spearheaded by Ro Mccalla’s 17 points. Veteran leader Dilla Thomas dished out 6 assists to go along with 6 rebounds, while Roshane Roberts contributed 11 points and 4 boards, with active hands on defense leading to 4 steals. Mayo Spencer added 8 points and 5 rebounds for the Claws in what would become a 46-42 victory over the Fire, handing them their first loss of the season. The two teams now sit tied for second best in the league standings with identical records of 4-1.
